The Kyng of Tars

by Anonymous (Middle English)

The Christian king of Tars refuses his daughter to the Sultan of Damascus, who attacks his kingdom; to save her father's people she marries the heathen lord, and bears him a shapeless lump of flesh. Christian baptism turns the lump into a living, fair child, the Sultan renounces his gods and is himself baptised, and the converted Sultan then conquers the lands of his enemies.
