Lucifer
A Tragedy
Leonard Charles van Noppen
Vondel's Lucifer (1654) stages the revolt in Heaven. When the herald Gabriel announces that God means to set man, still unborn in Paradise, above the angels, the proud Lucifer and his followers, Belzebub, Belial and Apollion among them, resolve to rebel. Michael leads the loyal host against them, the rebels are cast down into hell, and the angels' chorus closes the play with the promise of a Redeemer. The Dutch poet's drama has long been compared with Milton's Paradise Lost.
