The Tragedy of Macbeth

by William Shakespeare

Returning from battle, the Scottish general Macbeth is hailed by three witches as future king. Urged on by Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan in his sleep and seizes the throne, then kills Banquo and Macduff's family to secure it. Haunted by guilt, and by Banquo's ghost, he falls to the English army and Macduff at Dunsinane, as Birnam Wood seems to come against him. The play ends with Malcolm proclaimed king.
