Phaedra

by Jean Racine

Translated by Robert Bruce Boswell

At Troezen, Phaedra, wife of the absent Theseus, wastes away with a guilty passion for her stepson Hippolytus. Word comes that Theseus is dead, and she confesses her love; then he returns alive. Her nurse Oenone accuses Hippolytus of the very crime Phaedra herself desired, and Theseus calls down Neptune's curse on his son, who is killed by a sea monster. Phaedra takes poison and admits her guilt before she dies.
