Philoctetes
Translated by Lewis Campbell (1906)
Odysseus brings the young Neoptolemus to Lemnos to trick the exiled Philoctetes out of the bow of Heracles, without which Troy cannot fall. Neoptolemus, moved by pity and shame, gives the bow back, and only the appearance of the deified Heracles persuades the wounded archer to sail for Troy and healing.
