Bacchides; or, The Twin-Sisters

by Plautus

Translated by Henry Thomas Riley (1852)

Mnesilochus asks his friend Pistoclerus to find his lost mistress Bacchis, and Pistoclerus is drawn into the house of her twin sister, also called Bacchis; the quick-witted slave Chrysalus then tricks old Nicobulus out of his gold, not once but twice, to rescue the young men from a swaggering captain. When the fathers finally see through the scheme and come to demand their sons, the two courtesans coax them in as well.
