The Three Pieces of Money

by Plautus

Translated by Henry Thomas Riley (1852)

A comedy of money and friendship, adapted from Philemon's The Treasure. While the merchant Charmides is abroad, his spendthrift son Lesbonicus sells the family house, and Charmides' friend Callicles buys it, in secret, to protect the treasure buried beneath it. To give the daughter a dowry without shaming her brother, a hired sharper is sent with a pretended letter and 'three pieces of money'; but Charmides returns just in time to meet him. The play opens with Luxury leading her daughter Poverty to the young man's door.
