Parallel Lives, Part II
Philopoemen to Pompey and Agesilaus, with their Comparisons
Translated by John Dryden and others, revised by Arthur Hugh Clough (1859)
The second part of the Lives pairs Greek and Roman soldiers and statesmen of the Hellenistic and late Republican ages: Philopoemen and Flamininus, the liberators and last defenders of Greece; Pyrrhus and Marius; Lysander and Sylla; Cimon and Lucullus; Nicias and Crassus, two fortunes ruined abroad; Sertorius and Eumenes, exiles who led foreign armies; and Agesilaus and Pompey. As before, Plutarch reads character through deeds and sayings, and closes most pairs with a comparison.
