Parallel Lives, Part III
Alexander to Cicero, with their Comparisons
Translated by John Dryden and others, revised by Arthur Hugh Clough (1859)
Here Plutarch pairs the conquerors and the statesmen who failed to save their republics: Alexander with Caesar, the honest Phocion with Cato the Younger, the reforming kings of Sparta, Agis and Cleomenes, with the tribunes Tiberius and Caius Gracchus, and finally the orator Demosthenes with Cicero. Anecdote, omen and last words are his preferred evidence of character.
