Parallel Lives, Part IV
Demetrius to Otho, with their Comparisons
Translated by John Dryden and others, revised by Arthur Hugh Clough (1859)
The last part of the Lives pairs Demetrius the Besieger with Mark Antony, Dion of Syracuse with Marcus Brutus, and closes with the single Lives of Aratus of Sicyon, the Persian king Artaxerxes, and the short-lived emperors Galba and Otho. Plutarch reads ambition, luxury and loyalty through the fates of men who rose by arms and fell to their own excess or to conspiracy, from the Hellenistic kings to the civil wars of Rome and the year of the four emperors.
