The Pumpkinification of Claudius
Translated by W. H. D. Rouse (1902)
Seneca’s mock-deification of the dead emperor Claudius, a satire in prose and verse. Claudius labours to breathe his last, arrives at the gates of heaven stammering and lame, is argued over by the gods, and is at last condemned and sent below, to rattle dice for ever in a box with no bottom.
