Sir Amadace

A verse rendering

by Anonymous (Middle English)

Translated by Jessie L. Weston (1914)

Sir Amadace, ruined by his own open-handedness, sets out with what money is left and finds a dead man refused burial because of his debts. He spends everything to lay the corpse in the ground, and the favour is repaid when a mysterious White Knight helps him win a princess and a kingdom, on one terrible condition.
