The Spanish Tragedy

Containing the lamentable end of Don Horatio and Bel-imperia, with the pitiful death of old Hieronimo

by Thomas Kyd

The ghost of the Spanish courtier Don Andrea, slain in battle, is led back from the underworld by Revenge to watch his killer Balthazar punished. Instead he sees Andrea's friend Horatio murdered in his father's arbour and Hieronimo, the Knight-Marshall of Spain, driven half mad by grief as he seeks justice from a corrupt court. Hieronimo at last stages a play before the court in which the real deaths are carried out.
