Tartuffe; or, The Hypocrite

by Molière

Translated by Curtis Hidden Page (1908)

Orgon, a prosperous Parisian householder, has taken the pious Tartuffe into his home and fallen wholly under his spell, promising him his daughter's hand and his fortune. Orgon's family, led by the sharp-tongued maid Dorine and his wife Elmire, try to open his eyes to the impostor, who is in fact scheming to seize the house and seduce Elmire. Molière's comedy of religious hypocrisy was banned for five years after its first performance in 1664.
