The Trachinian Maidens

by Sophocles

Translated by Lewis Campbell (1906)

Deianira, fearing she is losing Heracles to the captive princess Iole, sends him a robe smeared with what she believes is the centaur Nessus' love-charm. It is a poison, and Heracles is carried home in agony to die on a pyre on Mount Oeta, while Deianira takes her own life.
