Quatrain XXXVII

by Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri 973–1057

Translated by Henry Baerlein (1909) · From The Diwan of Abu'l-Ala (1909)

Religion

But over this poor threshold will not pass,
For I may not unveil her, and alas!
The bridal gift I can't afford to pay.
