Quatrain XCVI

by Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri 973–1057

Translated by Henry Baerlein (1909) · From The Diwan of Abu'l-Ala (1909)

Religion

And every noise the dreamland people say
We sedulously note, and we and they
May be the shadows flung by what we seem.
