Love
Book V, 209
Translated by W. R. Paton (1916–18) · From The Greek Anthology (Loeb, vol. I, 1916)
By thy strand, O Paphian Cytherea, Cleander saw Nico swimming in the blue sea, and burning with love he teok to his heart dry coals from the wet maiden. He, standing on the land, was shipwrecked, but she in the sea was received gently by the beach. Now they are both equally in love, for the prayers were not in vain that he breathed on that strand.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
