Caput apri refero

by Anonymous (Middle English) c. 13th–16th century

From Early English Lyrics (1907)

Living

Caput apri refero

Resonans laudes domino.
The borés hede in hondes I bringe,
With garlondes gay and birdes singinge.
I pray you all, helpe me to singe,
Out estis in convivio.

The borés hede, I understonde,
Is cheffe service in all this londe,
Where so ever it may be fonde,
Servitur cum sinapio.

The borés hede, I dare well say,
Anon after the twelfthé day
He taketh his leve, and goth away;
Exivit tune de patria.
