Holver and Heivy made a grete party

by Anonymous (Middle English) c. 13th–16th century

From Early English Lyrics (1907)

Living

Holver and Heivy made a grete party,
Who schuld have the maistry
In londés where they go.

Than spak Holver ‘I am frece and joly;
I will have the maistry
In londés where we go.’

Than spak Heivy ‘I am loud and proud;
And I will have the maistry
In londés where we go.’

Than spak Holver, and set him downe on his knee,
‘I prey thee, jentil Heivy,
Sey me no veleny
In londés where we go.’
