Riddle 46

by Anonymous (Old English) c. 7th–11th century

Translated by Benjamin Thorpe (1842) · From Exeter Book Riddles (selection)

Arts & Sciences

A man sat at wine
with his two wives,
and his sons twain,
and his two daughters,
own brothers and sisters,
and their sons twain,
gentle first-borns.
The father was therein
of those youths
both,
with uncle and nephew.
In all were five
men and women
sitting within.
