Time & Brevity

Eclogue XXVI. — This Line, which is Anonymous, shows what should be removed from the Body on certain Days

by Decimus Magnus Ausonius c. AD 310 – c. 395

Translated by Hugh G. Evelyn-White (1919–21) · From Book VII. — The Eclogues

Time & Brevity

Clip nails on Tuesday, beards on Wednesday, hair on Friday. The above Line may be Confuted in the following Way Mercury likes a thief's nails ever-sharpened, and suffers not the fingers to lose their points. His beard is Jove's, her hair is Venus' glory: therefore these needs must mislike the minishing of that in which they severally delight. Thou, Mars, lovest the beardless, and thou, Moon, the bald: these do not forbid hair and cheeks to be trimmed. The Sun and Saturn have no scruples as to nails: therefore cancel that line of which gods disapprove.
