Nature

See how the Hills are candy'd o're with Snow

by Philip Ayres 1638–1712

From Lyric Poems, Made in Imitation of the Italians (1687)

Nature

SEE how the Hills are candy'd o're with Snow,
The Trees can scarce their Burdens undergo;
Frost does the Rivers wonted course retain,
That they refuse their Tribute to the Main:

Winds, Frost, and Snow against our Lives conspire;
Lay on more Wood (my Friends) and blow the Fire
'Gainst their Assaults let us our Forces join,
Dissolve the Weather by the strength of Wine.
