Social Commentaries
To Pride
From Two Bookes of Epigrammes, and Epitaphs (1639), Book II
Social Commentaries
If silver from superfluous moysture growes,
(Like that which drops from every Driuells nose)
If gold be but the dregs of earth, and stones,
(Though ne're so pretious) but her barren bones;
If flaunting silkes, rich scarlets, daintiest furres
Be but Beasts excrements, (which man abhorres)
Then Pride thou'rt odious, and thy Students be
Scarce able to commence to mans degree.
