Social Commentaries
Ill enough at the best
From Two Bookes of Epigrammes, and Epitaphs (1639), Book II
Social Commentaries
The Skinnes of beasts, that sacrificed were,
Were plucked off; but when we best appeare,
The services which we to God advance,
Are skinned ore with veyles of ignorance,
Pride, and hypocrisie; so much we prove
Strangers to simple truth and naked love.
