To a serpentine Sychophant

by Thomas Bancroft fl. 1633–1658

From Two Bookes of Epigrammes, and Epitaphs (1639), Book II

Social Commentaries

Thou liv'st by doing others deadly wrong
At great mens Tables, with thy banefull tongue:
And yet dependest (as thou dar'st averre)
On Heavens full hand, to be thy Caterer;
That threats to shake thee for detested trickes,
As Paul the Viper into burning Styx.
