Social Commentaries
To his Booke
From Two Bookes of Epigrammes, and Epitaphs (1639), Book I
Social Commentaries
Deare issue, some thy Name that view'd,
Did from rash premisses conclude,
That, through suffusion of thy gall,
Thy parts would prove Ictericall,
And that (wrapt up in sheets uncleane)
With scurrile Rymes and jests obsceane,
Thou wouldst prophane a good mans eare:
But (as thou art to Vertue deare)
Such lewd licentious tricks defie,
And cheat such Censures honestly.
