The fall of fortitude
From Two Bookes of Epigrammes, and Epitaphs (1639), Book II
Social Commentaries
Rich golden Vessels pale and sickly grow,
If not well furbusht with a painefull hand:
So men of noblest metall fall below
Their worth by sloth, or as meere cyphers stand,
And (by their dulnesse) making others mount
To Honour, are themselves of no account.
