Psalm 123

by William Barton 1598?–1678

From The Book of Psalms in Metre (1644)

Religion

O Thou that dwell'st above the skies,
I lift mine eyes to thee:
Even as a servant bends his eies,
His Masters hands to see.
As hand-maids watch their Mistress hands,
Our eye of faith even thus,
Upon our God fast fixed stands,
Till he commis'rate us.
Have mercy on us, ô most high,
Have mercy on our woes:
For wee are fill'd exceedingly,
With foul contempt of foes.
Our soul is fill'd exceeding much,
With foul contempt, and scorn
Of those that are at ease, and such
As have lift up the horn.
