Living

Epigram XXXIII

by Bhartrihari traditionally 5th–7th century AD

Translated by Paul Elmer More (1898) · From A Century of Indian Epigrams (1898)

Living

The god hath wove for ignorance a cloak
That he who will may wear;
And mantled thus amid the wisest folk
Fools may unchallenged fare: —
Be silent! over all that words afford,
Silence hath its reward.
