Living

Epigram XLIII

by Bhartrihari traditionally 5th–7th century AD

Translated by Paul Elmer More (1898) · From A Century of Indian Epigrams (1898)

Living

Pleasure of life we have not known,
Ourselves the sport of Fate alone;
Penance of soul we never sought,
But in our heart unbidden sorrows wrought.

Time hath not journeyed, — nay,
But we are passing day by day;
And the desires that still their rage
Are not grown old — ourselves are chilled with age.
