Living

Epigram XLII

by Bhartrihari traditionally 5th–7th century AD

Translated by Paul Elmer More (1898) · From A Century of Indian Epigrams (1898)

Living

The rooted trees would walk; the beast
For utterance yearning still is dumb;
Man toils for some far heaven, wherefrom
The enthroned gods were fain released.
