Living

Epigram LXXII

by Bhartrihari traditionally 5th–7th century AD

Translated by Paul Elmer More (1898) · From A Century of Indian Epigrams (1898)

Living

Old age like as a tiger held at bay —
Still crouches; sly diseases day by day
Our leaguered body sap;
As water from a broken urn, so leak
Our wasting minutes; — lo, this people seek
Oblivion in love's lap.
