Epigram XC

by Bhartrihari traditionally 5th–7th century AD

Translated by Paul Elmer More (1898) · From A Century of Indian Epigrams (1898)

Living

Of old they say this holy Ganga stream
Rolled in the heavenly fields her crystal dream,
And thence by prayer of saintly men was led
To pour on Çiva's head.

Awhile within the great god's matted locks
She wandered, till the high Himalayan rocks
Received her thunderous fall; forever thence
Seaward she rolls immense.
