Book III, Song VII: Pleasure's Sting

by Boethius c. AD 480–524

Translated by H. R. James (1897) · From The Consolation of Philosophy (1897)

Religion

This is the way of Pleasure:
She stings them that despoil her;
And, like the wingéd toiler
Who's lost her honeyed treasure,
She flies, but leaves her smart
Deep-rankling in the heart.
