To Olive Schreiner

by Robert Buchanan 1841–1901

From Songs of Empire (The New Rome, 1900)

History & Politics

PANSIES, for thoughts; and Rue, for gentle grief;
Roses, — for gladness given in large increase:

Add now to these one soft grey silvern leaf,
OLIVE, — for Peace!

O life that put'st our noisier lives to shame,
Sign that the Bow shall shine, the Deluge cease!

Steadfast and true and holy like thy name:
OLIVE,— for Peace!
