Love

I shall come forth as Gold

by Burggraf von Rietenburg fl. c. 1150–1170

Translated by Frank C. Nicholson (1907) · From Old German Love Songs (1907)

Love

This above all wealth I hold,
That to prove me's her desire.
I shall then be found like gold
Which is tested in the fire
And right well assayed.
All the better thus 'tis made,
Brighter, purer, fairer too.
What my song declares, is true.
The hotter it doth glow,
All the fairer will it show.
