Death & Dying

Epigram 24: Cleombrotus, high on a rock

by Callimachus c. 310 – c. 240 BC

Translated by H. W. Tytler (1793; Bohn 1856) · From Works of Callimachus (Tytler, 1793)

Death & Dying

Cleombrotus, high on a rock,
Above Ambracia stood,
Bade Sol adieu, and, as he spoke,
Plung’d headlong in the flood.
From no mischance the leap he took,
But sought the realms beneath,
Because he read in Plato’s book,
That souls live after death.
