Death & Dying

Epigram 27: Short was my life, and Micylus my name

by Callimachus c. 310 – c. 240 BC

Translated by H. W. Tytler (1793; Bohn 1856) · From Works of Callimachus (Tytler, 1793)

Death & Dying

Short was my life, and Micylus my name;
I gain’d with little wealth a poet’s fame,
And wisely pass’d without offence my time,
Friend to the good, unconscious of a crime.
If e’er I prais’d the bad, revenge it now,
Thou mother earth, and all yé powers below ;
Lie not, O goddess, lightly on my breast,
Nor let th’ infernal furies grant me rest.
