Love

Virelay

by Charles Cotton 1630–1687

From Poems on Several Occasions (1689)

Love

Thou cruel Fair, I go
To seek out any Fate but thee,
Since there is none can wound me so,
Nor that has half thy cruelty;
Thou cruel Fair, I go.

For ever then farewell,
'Tis a long leave I take, but oh!
To tarry with thee here is Hell,
And twenty thousand Hells to go;
For ever though farewell.
