Hymne VI: To the Nightingale

by Sir John Davies 1569–1626

From Hymnes of Astraea (1599)

History & Politics

Euery night from Euen till Morne
Loues Quirister amidde the thorne
Is now so sweet a Singer,
So sweete, as for her Song I scorne
Apollos voice, and finger.

But Nightingale since you delight
Euer to watch the Starrie night,
To all the Starres of heauen,
Heauen neuer had a Starre so bright,
As now to earth is giuen.

Royall Astraea makes our Day
Eternall with her beames, nor may
Grosse darkenesse ouercome her;
I now perceiue why some do write,
No countrie hath so short a night,
As England hath in sommer.
