Hymne VII: To the Rose

by Sir John Davies 1569–1626

From Hymnes of Astraea (1599)

History & Politics

Eye of the garden, Queene of flowers,
Loues Cuppe wherein he Nectar poures,
Ingendred first of Nectar:
Sweete nurse-child of the Springs young howres,
And Beauties faire Character.

Best Iewell that the earth doth weare,
Euen whē the braue yong Sun drawes neare,
To her hoate Loue pretending;
Himselfe likewise like forme doth beare,
At rising and descending.

Rose of the Queene of loue belou'd;
Englands great Kings diuinely mou'd,
Gaue Roses in their Banner;
It shewed that Bewties Rose indeede,
Now in this age should them succeede,
And raigne in more sweet manner.
