Religion

God is a distant, stately Lover,

by Emily Dickinson 1830–1886

From Further Poems of Emily Dickinson (1929)

Religion

God is a distant, stately Lover,
Woos, so He tells us, by His Son.
Surely a vicarious courtship!
Miles' and Priscilla's such a one.
But lest the soul, like fair Priscilla,
Choose the envoy and spurn the Groom,
Vouches, with hyperbolic archness,
Miles and John Alden
Are synonym.
