The Mind

The zeros taught us phosphorus,

by Emily Dickinson 1830–1886

From Further Poems of Emily Dickinson (1929)

The Mind

The zeros taught us phosphorus,
We learned to like the fire
By handling glaciers when a boy,
And tinder guessed by power
Of opposite to equal ought,
Eclipses sums imply,
Paralysis our primer numb
Unto vitality.
