Love

The quality of a Kisse

by William Drummond of Hawthornden 1585–1649

Love

THe kisse with so much strife
Which I late got (sweet Heart)
Was it a sign of Death, or was it Life?
Of Life it could not be,
For I by it did sigh my Soule in thee:
Ne was it Death, Death doth no joy impart.
Thou silent stand'st, ah! what did'st thou bequeath,
A dying Life to me, or living Death?
