Death & Dying

Iolas Epitaph

by William Drummond of Hawthornden 1585–1649

Death & Dying

HEre deare Iolas lies,
Who whilst he liv'd in Beauty did surpasse
That Boy, whose heavenly Eyes
Brought Cypris from above,
Or him to death who look'd in watry Glasse,
Even Judge the God of Love.
And if the Nymph once held of him so deare
Dorine the faire, would here but shed one Teare,
Thou shouldst in Natures scorne
A Purple Flow'r see of this Marble borne.
