Love

An Epigram out of Alphaeus Mitylenaeus. To Mr. Humphry Lind

by Charles Goodall 1671–1689

From Poems and Translations (1689)

Love

WE envy not, Philaphelus! the Great,
Nor would pull down their Pinacles of State:
Nor prop them up, projecting to aspire:
A Competency only we desire.
Yet Poverty we would not hug as such,
Lest ne quid nimis we should love too much.
