Of the cause of dearth

by Sir John Harington 1560–1612

From The Most Elegant and Witty Epigrams (1618), Book 1

Social Commentaries

I Heare our Country neighbors oft complaine,
Their fruits are still destroyd with too much rai
Some gesse by skill of Starres, and Science vaine,
Some watry Planet in the heauens doth raigne:
No, Sinne doth raigne on earth, the case is plaine
Which if we would repent, and then refraine,
The skyes would quickly keepe their course againe.
Now that with lewdnesse we be luld asleepe,
The heauens, to see our wickednesse, doe weepe.
