Of Soothsaying

by Sir John Harington 1560–1612

From The Most Elegant and Witty Epigrams (1618), Book 4

Social Commentaries

MIght Kings shun future mischief by foretelling
Thē amongst Soothsayers 'twere excellēt dweling
But if there be no means such harmes repelling,
The knowledge makes the sorrow more excelling.
But this, deare Soueraigne, me comfort doth,
That of these Sooth-sayers, very few say sooth.
