Social Commentaries

Of Cloacina and Sterquitius

by Sir John Harington 1560–1612

From The Most Elegant and Witty Epigrams (1618), Book 1

Social Commentaries

THe Romanes euer counted superstitious
Adored with high titles of Diuinitie,
Dame Cloacina, and the Lord Sterquitius,
Two persons in their State of great affinitie.
But we, that scorne opinions so pernitious,
Are taught by Truth well try'd, t'adore the Trinitie.
And, who-so care of true Religion takes,
Wil think such Saints wel shrined in AIAX.
